Each violation of the University Alcohol/Drug Policy will be reviewed according to the University’s Honor Code. The following sanction per alcohol/drug policy offense will be used as consistently as possible. The sequence of sanctions below may not be followed for more severe policy violations (e.g. excessive amounts of alcohol or for drugs more dangerous than marijuana). In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which is part of the Higher Education Act, the University has a right to notify parents/legal guardians if a student under the age of 21 violated an alcohol or drug policy or is accused of a violent crime.

Spalding University will inform parents/legal guardians of students who have violated alcohol and drug policies as described below.

1. First offense – Developmental Conversation, Official Warning and mandatory completion of eCheckUptoGo within time frame allotted by SDCL Staff. If eCheckUptoGo is not completed in allotted time then a $150 fine will be charged to the student account to go toward the Substance Abuse Prevention Fund. A letter explaining the fine will be sent to the student’s home address.
   
2. Second offense – Parental Notification and Required completion of the BASICS/CASICS program through the Student Counseling and Psychological Services Center within a time frame allotted by SDCL Staff. If BASICS/CASICS is not completed within allotted time frame a fine of $250 will be charged to the student’s account to go toward the Substance Abuse Prevention Fund. A letter explaining the fine will be sent to the student’s home address.
   
3. Third offense - University Probation, Parental Notification and a fine of $300 charged to the student’s account to go toward the Substance Abuse Prevention Fund. A letter explaining the fine will be sent to the student’s home address.
   
4. Fourth offense - University Suspension pending completion of an off-campus formal substance abuse treatment program. The substance abuse treatment program must be pre-approved by a qualified representative of the Student Development and Campus Life staff to ensure it is appropriate. A letter explaining the Suspension will be sent to the student’s home address. Additional sanctions may be assigned as deemed necessary by the appropriate student conduct body.
   

Additional sanctions may include, but are not limited to, assignment of community service hours, residence hall probations, educational sanctions, restitution, etc.
